What is Ethical Hacking

Ethical hacking is the process of assessing the security posture of a system to know the weakness and Vulnerabilities in the system in a lawful manner.

The need for the Ethical hacker

With the booming internet across the country, people tend to use apps, social media, digital payments were aroused. Human sensitive data should be also stored in a database. Then security for these data was really needed. Methodologies such as writing codes and reverse engineering to find out the threat in a particular system or network, which a malicious attacker may find and cause data loss or financial loss to the individual or an organization.

Knowledge required to become an ethical hacker.

In order to enter the security filed in the IT industry, you should know areas very well such as Networking, Programming, Databases, Operating systems. If you think, you have some knowledge about those areas, you can start hacking. But the most important thing is you should stay in a legal basement. Don't engage in "black-hat" hacking. Like attacking someone's computer without their full permission. If you do so your ethical hacking career may end there.

You should learn how to operate with Unix and Linux. Because most of the best-operating systems for hacking is based on the Linux kernel. Unix/Linux was contributed a lot in the world of security. Without leaning Unix/Linux, you won't be able to become a hacker.

To become a great hacker you should master the art of Cryptography. Cryptography is the techniques for secure communication. Encryption and Decryption are the most important skill in hacking. You should follow some books related to hacking.  It is good to follow some free ethical hacking tutorials/ courses even though it doesn't give you certification. Always you should update with hacking tools and latest news about hacking and new technologies. If you want to polish your profession in the IT security sector you should follow and certify some paid courses such as CEH, CHFI, OSCP, OSCE, OSWP, CISM, and CISSP.

Then to meet peers and know about their techniques you can participate in international hacking conferences. Always practice, practice and practice then only you can be more advance hacker. you should think about how the black hacker thinks and find the vulnerabilities of the systems. 


Job prospects of the Ethical hacker

Hackers can request high salary for what they are doing. Ethical hacker median yearly payment is around $90,000.  The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics(BLS) indicates that information security analytic's job market will be increased by 28% from 2016 to 2026. If you are skilful, experienced ethical hacker money flaw has been already built.  Hacker opportunities are available in department of defence or homeland security which need high security. By participating with hacking conferences you can meet peers and from the hacking community also you can find job opportunities. As the next world highly dependent on data, data security is more important. So find a job for a skilful ethical hacker is not that much hard.

    Nice writeup. Ethical hacking is an evolving field in the Information Technology sector as you already mention in your article. We could expect a lot of job openings in both local and foreign in the very near future. In recent times Sri Lankan software development house and service provider hit by a frequent cyber attack. These incidents lead Sri Lankan IT industry to think again about their ability to resilient against cyber attacks.

    Ethical Hacking. Interesting read. One small question. Why most of the hacking tools are developed around the Linux platform?

      Thank you Kavi asking question, A good percentage of hacking tools are written for Linux. This is because using scripting languages such as BASH and lightweight languages such as Python makes it easy to write minimal code that accomplishes a lot. Today, over 90% of hacking tools available are written for Linux
